A Unique Eating Experience in Hyde
Two Cuban sisters, Belen and Cangui run this Hyde Restaurant. They have converted the former function room, above The Sportsman in Mottram Road next to Morrison’s supermarket.
This cosy, 40 seater restaurant boasts a cocktail bar and projection TV screen showing Cuban images and DVD’s of Cuban musicians with the sound set as low background music. These, together with other Cuban memorabilia including full size Cuban flags and pictures of Ché Guevara, create a real Cuban atmosphere.
Dining at the El Cuba Libre
There are several ways to try Cuban cuisine at El Cuba Libre, by choosing from the Tapas selection (recommended) or more traditionally by selecting from one of a number of main courses on offer, maybe choosing one Tapas as a starter and creating a three course by selecting a Cuban Dessert.
The menu is also uniquely Cuban, with exotic dishes like ‘Plátanos Verde, dos veces fritos con salsas’ (Green Plantains, twice fried and served with dips) or ‘Yucca con Mojo Criollo’ (boiled Yucca served with a sauce of extra virgin olive oil, garlic & lemon).
Everything is “hecho en casa” (prepared and home-cooked on the premises), the girls both have many years catering experience behind them; they make their own croquettes and “Papas Rellenas” (stuffed, mashed potato balls) and delightful, exotic Cuban sweets for the dessert menu.
Of course the sisters will always be willing to prepare something English or other special dishes to order.
The restaurant is open Wednesday to Saturday 6pm till 10pm and Sunday 12 noon till 8pm. A bar menu is available at most other times in The Sportsman.
There is a cocktail menu, surely most people will want to try the Cuban national drink ‘Cuba Libre’ or maybe the ever popular Mojito. Real ales can be ordered from the waiter/waitresses who will happily bring them up from the downstairs bar in The Sportsman.
